"I recently ran across this equation in a grade 8 physical science lab book to calculate the rate of gravity by use of the pendulum
The eqation was this: A (sub g) = 39.5 times L/T ( squared.)
The variable L is the length of the string used for the pendulum. T is the
time is takes for the pendulum to make one full swing. One complete
swing is back and forth.
My question is this: Where did the number 39.5 come from?. My guess is
that it must be a constant, but where was it derived from? Why is it 39.5?

Is outer space hot, or cold?
In the movie: "Apollo 13" the scene portrayed was inside the space capsule,
and the CO2 scrubber wasn't working. The air inside the capsule became cold
and the viewer (the audience in the theater) was able to see the frost in the
astronaut's breath. But, whenever I've seen scenes in other movies where
the actors are enclosed in a tight room and the air is being depleted, the
scene portrayed is that the room-air gets warmer, not colder. The actors are
portrayed as getting very hot and sweaty in an enclosed room that is lacking in
ventilation.
So...why the descrepency in the two Hollywood scenes? My concern is that
the capsule, while in outer space, is essentially an enclosed room, and a very
small one, at that.
Please, don't suggest that the astronaut's body heat escaped out of the capsule.
the way heat leaves a dwelling in someone's home. That would suggest a leak
which would have been life-threatening beyond the point of a leaky oxygen
tank and debunked CO2 scrubber. The capsule was so designed to keep artificial
atmosphere inside. Any leak would have killed them all instantly much the way
a person is sucked out the window of a 747 flying at 30,000 feet.
I found this to be very perplexing, when I saw the movie.
