How come when potatoes sit for a very long time they begin to grow these gross stuff? What are they called and how did they get there?
Potatoes are different from other vegetables and fruits. They are "tubers", basically a clump of stored starches and nutrients. Potatoes grow under the soil, and if they are left there, they will sprout and grow new potato plants. This is what happens when they sit in your pantry for a long time. These potatoes are trying to grow new plants.
